Here, we will visit the ancestral Q’eswachaka Bridge, a vital piece of architectural and cultural heritage for the Quechua people. This bridge, built over the majestic ApurĂmac River, is a straw bridge that undergoes annual maintenance due to degradation from the highland climate. The reconstruction is a communal effort by local peasant communities, ensuring that this cultural treasure is preserved.
The bridge spans 33 meters in length and 1.20 meters in width, constructed solely from braided straw (Ichu). The process of creating the QUESWAS (straw ropes) involves sun-drying, pounding, and flattening the straw, showcasing the incredible craftsmanship of the highland inhabitants.
Midday:
Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before we continue our return journey.
Ccarañahui Caves:
On our way back to Cusco, we will visit the impressive Ccarañahui or Q’arañahui caves. These caves hold historical significance, as it is said that the Incas visited them to communicate spiritually with their gods. The presence of a mysterious lake within the cave adds a unique element of intrigue and natural beauty, making it a fascinating stop.

Annual Reconstruction of Q’eswachaka Bridge
The Q’eswachaka Bridge requires annual maintenance due to the natural decomposition of the straw (Ichu) used in its construction. Since Inca times, this reconstruction has occurred over three days during the second Sunday of June, culminating in a fourth day of festivities featuring various indigenous dances. This event showcases the unique traditions and customs of the local communities, allowing visitors to experience the cultural richness of the region.
